Programme Overview

The BSc (Hons) Ethical Hacking and Cybersecurity is a degree programme offered by Coventry University. Successful completion carries the same academic status as that offered to Coventry’s on-campus graduates.

With a strong emphasis on practical application of academic and theoretical aspects, the programme aims to teach the key skills and competencies required by a cyber security professional, using specialised physical and virtual labs. Students will cover specialist security topics in the computing field, including ethical hacking, digital forensics, penetration testing, network security and cryptography.

Programme Aims

This programme enables students to:

  • have a clearly targeted and developed set of skills in computer science with special emphasis on security;
  • identify and analyse the threats posed to modern information structures and will be able to apply defences against such threats;
  • devise methods of testing a system’s security and possess the skills needed to break into systems that have vulnerabilities; and
  • advise a company on how to set up secure systems.

As well as the technical foci, the programme contains content that prepares students in social, ethical, legal and professional aspects of a cooperative human environment such as the workplace.

Career Prospects

The practical nature of this programme places an emphasis on students' future employability, developing a wide range of technical, analytical, design and professional skills. Graduates will be able to find employment in ethical hacking and penetration testing roles, malware and software security analysis, telecoms security, digital forensics and evidence gathering, network and security administration within organisations, government organisations and insurance companies.

Assessment
Assessment is based on coursework, an examination and a final project.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must hold one of the qualifications listed below:

  • Higher Diploma in Information and Network Security; or
  • A qualification equivalent to the above *

All applicants must be able to demonstrate competence equivalent to an HKCEE Grade E or HKDSE Level 2 in Mathematics. Applicants from the approved VTC feeder programmes are considered to have met this requirement.

English Proficiency Requirements

  • Holders of VTC Higher Diploma or Professional Diploma taught and assessed in English; or
  • Applicants who are not from the approved VTC feeder programmes should have successfully completed a Higher Diploma or Associate Degree taught and assessed in English from a recognised institution in Hong Kong or equivalent, or alternatively they should have attained a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent.
